Language Lessons (isiZulu & isiXhosa)

Many adoptees find that one of the most challenging parts of a return visit to their country of origin is the inability to speak the local language. Locals often expect another Black person to speak their local language, and can be surprised when that is not the case. Some adoptees feel some embarrassment when this happens; triggering some painful emotions of loss.

While a few language lessons do not negate this loss (nor should they), they can go a long way in basic comfort for the entire family. In some cases, it can also help with safety, as greeting anyone in their mother-tongue is often well-received.

TMP is proud to offer families isiZulu or isiXhosa Lessons (via Zoom, basic communication plus translation sheet/worksheets with session packages):

  • 30 minutes: $15/CDN
  • 45 minutes: $20/CDN
  • 5-session package of 30-minute sessions: $65/CDN
  • 5-session package of 45-minute sessions: $80/CDN
  • 10-session package of 30-minute sessions: $130/CDN
  • 10-session package of 45-minute sessions: $175/CDN

All sessions will be hosted via Zoom or WhatsApp video and scheduled in a group chat via WhatsApp with TMP and your instructor. Families travelling to South Africa may also request in-person lessons, and will be scheduled if an instructor is available.
