Family "R" - adoptive family

Our family returned to South Africa for the first time since our adoption this summer, and The Mosaic Project was a big part of making it a successful trip. Thabiso gave our son  (age 11, adopted at 4) Zulu lessons online before we left and did a great job understanding his conflicted feelings about the language (wanting to learn and being very self-conscious about not knowing it!).

Karen and Majola arranged a day trip where they took our family on a tour of a township connected to our son's first family and a visit to the rural town where our son was born. Our kids felt so comfortable and at ease with them and it allowed us as parents to enjoy the day and attend to all the big emotions that a trip like this can bring up. I highly recommend The Mosaic Project to other families in the network; we are so excited that these services now exist in South Africa.

1. Family "H" - adoptive family

We met Karyn during a very challenging and  highly emotional time in our lives. The support we received from Karyn was practical as she guided us through complex logistics, while also completely supporting us emotionally.  She regularly modified her hours in order to be available to us, and even supported us daily during our trip, despite being on a family vacation.

While her dedication and process guidance was amazing, her understanding of childhood trauma and the change to our family dynamic was absolutely the most valuable aspect of our working relationship.  Not only has she continued to walk us through understanding the challenges our son has walked through, but she has also helped in providing advice for the major adjustments met by his older sibling.

She is always supportive and encouraging, providing us with both research and experience backed advice.  We consistently feel so much better equipped and encouraged after our conversations with Karyn.  We could not have done this adoption without her, and we are incredibly grateful to know her and have her as a resource.

2. Family "N" - adoptive family

I worked closely with Karyn for 2 1/2 years while I was navigating some challenges with my amazing adopted daughter. Along with being with me and advising me every step of the way, she also became a great friend. Karyn was very responsive to my many emails and questions and was never too busy for me. She cared about every aspect of my life and journey to my daughter, and she still checks in often to see how we are! I will forever be thankful for all she has done to bring my family together.

The greatest gift Karyn gave our family wasn't just practical support, it was helping us to realize we weren't alone. During one of the most challenging seasons of our lives, we walked alongside us with compassion, understanding and support. Knowing someone who truly understood what we were going th

House Building in Inanda

We were recently retained by a Canadian adoptive family to support their child's South African birth family in securing sustainable housing. We met with the SA family several times to ensure we understood what they needed and how we could help, and then we built them a house! We were so honoured to take a day-trip with a Canadian adoptive family who was recently visiting South Africa! We fetched them at their B & B, did a short tour of their child's first home in a Durban township, then took a drive up the coast to see the hospital the child was born in. We wrapped it up with dinner overlooking the ocean in Ballito - what a magical day! View the photos below, or click the link to read the family's testimonial upon returning to Canada.

Birth Family Searching

TMP has undertaken several searched for birth family in South Africa and has put together a "searching team" that includes  birth/adoptees, adoptive parents, local Zulu & Xhosa speakers and social workers. We are also honoured to be working with a South African birth-mother who has joined our team - she believes (as we do) in the child's right to know their origin story, and works with us to bring that gift to other first and adoptive families.
